On Wednesday 1 June, we'll be holding a Volunteer Open Day from 1pm - 7pm. This will be the first time we have ever covered every aspect of Aware in a single day, from volunteering with our support services to raising funds to lending a hand with events.

The venue is No. 5 South Leinster St (part of the National Gallery, entrance to the right of the Clare St Gallery entrance). Anyone who is interested in giving the gift of their time to help us with our work is encouraged to attend. Note that the date we originally advertised has since changed because of the Queen of England's state visit.

We have a huge variety of opportunities for volunteers. Some require only a few hours volunteering per year (e.g. Aware Christmas 10k run, Daisy Days) while roles within Aware’s support services typically require a weekly commitment of 2-3 hours. There are also other opportunities too, which means that anyone who wants to donate some of their time to a very important cause can be facilitated.

And remember, volunteers benefit too. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself". Or as our own volunteers say:

"People reach out to Aware in what sometimes can be their darkest hour and to be able to bring some peace and ease from their pain for the short time that they speak with us is indeed a privilege."

"To have someone you have never spoken to before confide in you in a manner in which they may never have confided in anyone else surpasses any payment that could be made for giving a few hours of your time."

"Aware is such a great organisation to work with and I feel very fulfilled in the work I do."

We look forward to seeing you on the day - just drop in between 1pm and 7pm at whatever time suits you.

PS Please spread the word to family and friends by sharing the details with them. Even a once-a-year commitment helps us greatly so almost everyone can help one way or another. If you're ready to apply already, see the Volunteering Opportunities page.

I enquired with yous before about a support group in Athlone of which there is none at present.  I know a lady very interested in running it who is very capable.  Would that be a possiblility.  I’d much obliged if you would let me know.  Thanks

Hi Nuala,

If we have enough volunteers to sustain a support group in any area, then we’ll always try to get one set up, advertised, etc.

The best thing for her to do would be to send in an application form and talk it through with the Support Group Co-Ordinator for the region then. Forms can be downloaded here: http://www.aware.ie/get_involved/support_group_form/
