Supporting people in their community

Support Line

We answered 11,137 calls on our Support Line. All calls to the line, which is open 365 days a year, are free of charge to the caller. The average cost to Aware per call is €15.

Support Groups

We offer 39 support groups nationwide and in 2015 there were 12,617 visits to these groups. The service is free of charge to attendees and the average cost to Aware is €25 per visit.

Support Mail

We responded to 2,366 email requests for help and support. This free encrypted service is free of charge with the average cost to Aware of €15 per email.


Aware offers support groups for relatives in Dublin and Cork. In 2015, these groups received 150 visits from relatives. In addition, many of the calls and emails to Aware were from relatives or those concerned for someone. In April 2016, Aware launched a new programme specifically for relatives and those who care about someone who is experiencing depression or bipolar disorder.

Adult education programmes

Life Skills CBT programmes

Our Life Skills programmes are available nationwide and online. The Life Skills Group programme comprises six weekly 90-minute group sessions and is delivered in locations nationwide. The Life Skills Online programme has eight modules and the participant is supported by a trained Aware volunteer giving one-to-one support.

In 2015, 2,557 people across every county in Ireland participated in the Life Skills programmes. Both programmes are free of charge to participants; the average cost to Aware is €30 per session.


Aware delivers its Wellness@Work programme to companies nationwide. In 2015, 138 sessions were delivered to approx. 2,000 employees.

Youth education programmes

Beat the Blues

Aware offers a range of youth mental health education programmes for students aged 15-18. In 2015, 27,970 students in 476 schools across every county in Ireland participated in the 70-minute Beat the Blues talk. 25 Life Skills for Schools programmes were delivered to 443 students. And 84 young people took part in the Beat the Blues Online programme, where they were individually supported by a trained Aware volunteer.

All of Aware’s youth programmes are delivered free of charge to students and schools, at an average cost to Aware of €14 per student.

In September 2016, the organisation will launch a whole community approach to its youth education programmes, with talks for teachers and parents added.



The Aware website is an extensive platform of information and resources. In 2015, the website had 285,000 unique visits and 173,000 views of Aware’s monthly lectures

How do we deliver these services?

We require professional staff to develop polices, best practice processes and standards. We need experienced staff members who can recruit, train, and assist our volunteers and contractors to deliver our services. Our services are reviewed by a clinical committee and we have a Clinical Director who provides oversight on all our services. Our services are independently evaluated by an external evaluator to ensure we are providing services to the highest standards.

We have 350 active volunteers nationwide who play a huge role in our organisation and our volunteers need staff support in order that we can deliver our services to the highest standards. For example all volunteers are Garda vetted and we have regular communication with all our volunteers about best practice and how we can improve our services. Our administration costs as a % of our total costs in 2015 were just under 5%.

We also have a small fundraising department (four staff) who are responsible for generating income and supporting volunteers who organise community fundraising events. 85% of all our income comes from public donations and corporate fundraising. Our fundraising staff are also responsible for managing a number of annual Aware fundraising events (walks, runs, cycles and flag days, etc.). 15% of our income comes from the HSE/NOSP.
