Month: April 2014
Speaker: Professor Jim Lucey
Topic: Sing, Dance, Play and Be Mindful: A Practical Guide to the Science of Mental Health (Anxiety)
Summary: Professor Lucey shares a dialogue on the nature of mental health, specifically referencing anxiety and the avoidance of positive experience. He talks about the ongoing difficulty with the diagnosis of ‘depression’ in its variant forms and the necessary consideration of childhood memories, current life style and felt states of shame and regret by individuals when trying to understand anxiety. He focuses on ‘recovery’ and how building resilience through engaging with our communities can support this. Professor Lucey references several academic studies which identify ‘mindfulness’ as the cornerstone of treatment for anxiety and depression.
