Dominic Layden


Dominic Layden,

Prior to joining Aware he held senior executive roles in the UK,USA and Ireland and has also run his own restructuring and turnaround advisory business. He is former Country Manager for Motorola Ireland and a former Vice President and General Manager for a global networks division with Motorola based in the USA. He was also a former Chief Executive for Meridian Ltd and has served on numerous boards of directors. He has a B. Sc. in Management from Trinity College.

Director of Services

Brid trained as a psychiatric nurse in St. Patricks Hospital, Dublin, and a general nurse in St. James’ Hospital, Dublin. Following many years of nursing experience in various roles, she became the Deputy Director of Nursing in St. John of God Hospital in Stillorgan in 2009 and having completed a M Sc in Health Services Management, she moved to Director of Services with St. John of God services in 2012. Having always been passionate about mental health, she feels it is a privilege to be involved in providing mental health education, information and support to people all over Ireland and to be assisting in reducing the stigma of mental ill health


Gerry O'Brien Gerry O’Brien
Head of Fundraising and Business Development

Gerry joined Aware in 2015 and his responsibilities include:  community fundraising; business development; major / corporate donor relations; fundraising events.  Gerry holds a BA in Economics and Politics and a Master Degree in Economic Science from UCD.  He started his career in the Civil Service and served for a time as Deputy Private Secretary to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.  Immediately prior to joining Aware, Gerry spent 16 years with Bank of Ireland where he held a number of senior management positions, specialising in business development and relationship management.


Emily Barton

Event Development Executive

Emily has been working in events for over 6 years, first with corporate international conferences and event logistics and progressing to St. Patrick’s Festival Dublin for 3 years in Sponsorship and Event Development. As Event Development Executive, Emily is responsible for the strategic, commercial and logistical management of all Aware events and community fundraising. Emily enjoys many active hobbies such as hiking, archery, and sailing.

Business Development Executive

Drew joined Aware in summer 2014 as Business Development Executive and actively seeks new opportunities for Aware to partner with companies on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and corporate partnerships. With a background in the hospitality sector, Drew came to Aware following a hugely enjoyable 17 years with The K Club. He is passionate about Aware’s work, particularly the positive mental health programmes which deliver wellbeing and resilience skills to students and employees across Ireland. Education and On-Line Services Co-ordinator

Katy has worked in the mental health field for over 17 years, with the HSE, Mental Health Ireland and North Dublin Befriending Service before joining Aware in 2010. She feels privileged to work within all four of the Aware objectives: to inform & educate, to provide emotional & practical support, to provide mental health & resilience training and to support research into depression, which makes her job very interesting and diverse. She lives in Dublin with her family and enjoys walking her dogs and trying new dishes in cooking.

Rosemary has worked with Aware since 2012. As the National Coordinator for Support Groups, she is involved with the recruitment, training and support of volunteers who facilitate Aware’s nationwide groups. She formerly worked with Business in the Community, the Sunday Tribune and worked in the UK. Rosemary has a Bachelor of Business Studies from UCD.



Emma BarnesDr Emma Barnes
Support Line and Support Mail Service Manager

In 2010, Emma completed her PhD entitled ‘From Despair to Where: Young People’s Lived Experience of Depression and Recovery’. She joined the Aware team the same year as Support Line and Support Mail manager, having previously volunteered with the organisation. She manages the operational needs of both services, including recruitment, training and ongoing support of volunteers. As the organisation’s Designated Liaison Officer she is responsible for issues relating to Aware’s Confidentiality Policy. Emma also manages Aware’s Garda Vetting process. She has previously lectured in various areas such as Research Methods and Social Analysis, and currently lectures part-time on the Diploma in Addictions Studies at NUIM. A volunteer with St Vincent De Paul and non-executive board member with Candle Community Trust, Emma enjoys tennis, running and anything ‘outdoorsy’.

Training and Recruitment Officer

I am responsible for the training & development of existing and new Contract Trainers, a post that I started in November 2015. Prior to this, for a number of years, I was delivering the Life Skills Programme for adults and also in secondary schools for young people as well as Wellness@Work training for a variety of corporate clients. I am passionate about training and really enjoy interacting with our Contractors to help them achieve a high and consistent quality of training aimed at helping people experiencing, and/or effected by depression, make a real difference to their lives.
My role is extremely rewarding.

Bernie has been working as a Community Employment Supervisor for 22 years, 14 of those at Aware.  The CE project is based in the Aware Charity Shop in Phibsborough.  The project gives work experience and training opportunities to people who have been long term unemployed as well as people who have been out of the work force through illness.  Bernie has a Management qualification from the National College of Ireland.  She really enjoys her role in a busy retail environment and is passionate about fitness.


Sandra Hogan
PR Manager

With 17 years’ experience in PR and communications Sandra inputs across all aspects of Aware’s work, including Services, Fundraising, Corporate communications, programme development, publications and campaigns. Particular passions are words and language; writing; tailoring messages according to audience needs, and always being mindful of the bigger picture while never overlooking the detail. Sandra began her PR journey in DIT Aungier Street and joined Aware after memorable stints with Riverdance and RTÉ among others.


Elisha Kenny
Accounts Administrator

Elisha joined the Aware Team in 2005 as the Accounts Administrator with responsibility for the day to day accounting function, independently audited each year. Prior to Aware, Elisha worked in the Corporate Sector in the same capacity for 10 years. Outside Aware she enjoys spending her free time with her 4 year old son who keeps her very active.


Jane Randall
Administration Support Fundraising Department

Jane joined Aware in 2006, spent 7 years in the Administration Office and since then has been a member of the Fundraising Team. Her role is supporting the team in the administration of community fundraising, corporate events and Aware events. Jane enjoys the variety of her role and the interaction with people and their fundraising projects –  no two days are the same in the Fundraising Office!  Jane also manages bookings for the Wellness@Work programmes.


Rachel Ní Fhearghusa 
Office Coordinator

Rachel joined aware in 2016 in the Administration Office. She supports the services department and administration within Aware. Rachel holds a BA in Humanities from St Patrick’s College. She has enjoyed a variety of administrations roles within the telecommunications and financial sector.
