Dr Claire Hayes

Dr. Claire Hayes’s interest in helping people cope with anxiety dates back to research she carried out in 1988 on how people cope with stress. Her two Masters degrees and her PhD expanded on this work, exploring further the areas of stress, coping, prevention and resilience. She continues to build on her combined thirty-seven years of training and experience as a clinical psychologist, lecturer, author and teacher to help individuals, groups and organisations to understand the particular nature of their stressors and to apply evidence-based psychological principles to help them cope with these.Claire was on the Board of Aware from 2007 to 2011. She then worked with the volunteers and staff as Aware’s Clinical Director 2011 to 2017. Claire has a successful consultancy practice in helping people of all ages understand and manage a range of challenges including anxiety, bullying, chronic illness and/or depression. She has developed a very clear and logical approach to helping people understand the basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has become known as ‘The Coping Triangle’ (©Hayes). She has written widely on how to help people cope with stress and has become a regular contributor to Irish national media including current affairs television and radio programmes and national press.

Stephen is a chartered counselling psychologist and group psychotherapist accredited with these relevant professional bodies. He has a breadth of experience operationally leading teams and working as a psychotherapist in the health service and charity sector. He is passionate about the development and delivery of excellent support, education and information services for people experiencing depression, bipolar disorder and other mood related conditions. Stephen holds a MSc Counselling Psychology and MSc Group Analytic Psychotherapy.

Jamie joined Aware in Summer 2017 as Communications and Event Manager. Prior to Aware, she spent 11 years working in PR agencies managing a diverse portfolio of clients across the consumer, technology, corporate and charity sectors. Stephen has held senior roles in a variety of industries in Ireland. He was Head of Sales with Sky TV for several years, and most recently held the role of Head of Operations with Hickey’s Pharmacy. Karen joined the Aware team in spring 2017. Karen holds a BA from Maynooth University and Masters' in Sustainable Rural Development from UCD and Cyberpsychology from IADT Dun Laoghaire. She is responsible for the upkeep of the website and sharing Aware’s message across all social media channels, in addition to supporting on Aware events and campaigns. Karen is passionate about mental health and previously volunteered with Aware for a number of years, before moving to work in the charity sector. She is currently undertaking a BSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Drew joined Aware in summer 2014 as Business Development Executive and actively seeks new opportunities for Aware to partner with companies on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and corporate partnerships. With a background in the hospitality sector, Drew came to Aware following a hugely enjoyable 17 years with The K Club. He is passionate about Aware’s work, particularly the positive mental health programmes which deliver wellbeing and resilience skills to students and employees across Ireland.

Jane joined Aware in 2006, spent 7 years in the Administration Office and since then has been a member of the Fundraising Team. Her role is supporting the team in the administration of community fundraising, corporate events and Aware events. Jane enjoys the variety of her role and the interaction with people and their fundraising projects – no two days are the same in the fundraising office!

Prior to joining Aware Emma worked as a lecturer and tutor while completing her PhD ‘From Despair to Where? An exploration of the lived experience of emotional distress and recovery among young adults’. Emma joined Aware as the Support Line and Support Mail service manager while also having responsibility for Garda vetting, complaints and issues relating to confidentiality (Designated Liaison Person). In her current role she has the responsibility for the all aspects of volunteer recruitment and training while also supporting Life Skills Online and remains as DLP. She also holds a Diploma in Child Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as well as a Certificate in Teaching and Learning. She has a long history of volunteering and is currently a Board member with a community trust.

Rosemary has worked with Aware since 2012. As the National Coordinator for Support Groups, she is involved with the recruitment, training and support of volunteers who facilitate Aware’s nationwide groups. Dee is responsible for the training and development of existing and new Contract Trainers, a post that she started in November 2015. Prior to this, for a number of years, Dee was delivering the Life Skills Programme for adults and also in secondary schools for young people as well as Wellness@Work training for a variety of corporate clients. She is passionate about training and really enjoys interacting with Contractors to help them achieve a high and consistent quality of training aimed at helping people experiencing, and/or effected by depression, make a real difference to their lives. Dee finds her role extremely rewarding.

Leah joined the Aware team in December 2017, where she is responsible for the operational management of Aware's educational programmes. Leah also trains and mentors our volunteers who support clients on our "Life Skills Online Programme". Prior to her time in Aware she has worked in both Ireland and Australia in the Events Industry. She originally studied Business and Marketing in TU Dublin and while in Australia completed a Diploma in Event Management in the Fitzwilliam Institute in Perth WA.

Maria joined Aware in May 2018 as the Support Line and Support Mail Manager. With a background in team management and development, Maria is passionate about looking after the volunteers who offer support through the Support Line and Support Mail services. Maria came to Aware following enjoyable team development positions in both telecoms and insurance industries, and most recently as Legal Debt Controller in the facilities services sector. Maria is also the Aware complaints and compliments representative, deputy designated liaison person for confidentiality concerns, and Garda vetting.

Barbara took up the role of Senior Administrator with Aware in November 2017. She has over 20 years’ experience of working at senior executive level in the corporate and not-for-profit sector. Elisha joined the Aware Team in 2005 as the Accounts Administrator with responsibility for the day to day accounting function, independently audited each year. Prior to Aware, Elisha worked in the Corporate Sector in the same capacity for 10 years. Outside Aware she enjoys spending her free time with her 8 year old son who keeps her very active.
