David Gillick

Athlete

As part of Aware’s resilience series, athlete, David Gillick, talks about his career on the running track, hanging up the spikes and the impact that had on his mental health.

“I’m the youngest of four, and we grew up in Ballinteer. I did a lot of sport all the way up to leaving cert really, including athletics. I was eighteen and I went to Jamaica for the world junior championships. That experience blew my mind, it was amazing. Usain Bolt was only sixteen but he competed there. It was in Kingston, his hometown. Forty thousand people in the stadium shouting ‘Bolt’, and I can just remember thinking I want more of this, this was amazing.”
